When Lexus Met Levinson

An article from the Lexus Owners Magazine by Peter Behrens

Mark Levinson has long been known as a sound purist, developing home and studio systems since 1972 that are outside the box in terms of sonic reproduction. Levinson’s innovations have been coveted by many auto-makers, who came courting his systems for their vehicles. But it seemed that whenever his audio-sleuths investigated the cars, they found their cabin architectures wanting. That was until Levinson met Lexus.

Levinson had the unique opportunity to be involved in the acoustic design of Lexus’s cabins. The enveloping tranquility when you shut the car door allows a unique platform for harmonic indulgence at highway speed.

High-fidelity sound in an automobile is not about loud. It is about the gorgeous integrity of sonic dynamics, and in each Lexus model fitted with a Levinson system, the acoustic flavor of that vehicle – from the commodious cabin of the LX 470 SUV to the scaled-down intimacy of the SC 430 – has been considered.

The resulting audio qualities are so rich and true that driving, say, in the coupe with the top down, while playing Beethoven’s Sixth (or anything by Duke Ellington) gives you the impression that the world is running to a superb soundtrack.

Another uncanny feature of the Levinson/Lexus sound: delicious acoustic imaging, allowing the listener to sense where each instrument or vocalist is positioned on the stage or in the studio. You have season tickets for the best seats in the house. – Peter Behrens
